Pokémon Go is a mixed bag. On one hand, it’s a fun game and encourages people to go out and explore the world with others, bringing a lot of people together in the process. On the other hand, it’s been plagued with bugs and server issues. An inability to connect, not tracking walking distance, and many other problems have been major annoyances.
If Niantic fixed those bugs and that was the end of it, things would have been good. But Niantic decided to take the broken Pokémon tracking system, and instead of fixing it, removed it entirely. With a lack of communication from the company, people were understandably upset.
Now we get another bombshell dropped on us. The latest update to the game blocks rooted and jailbroken users from accessing the game. Root (and jailbreak for iOS users) is used for so many things, yet Niantic is basically treating all rooted users as cheaters and blocking them from playing the game.
The sad part is that you can get around this with Xposed if you really wanted to, so blocking the cheaters isn’t really going to work with this move.
If you’re interested in what was added, here’s a changelog:
- Implemented Buddy Pokémon: Trainers will now be able to choose one of their Pokémon to be their buddy. A Trainer can earn Candy for their Buddy Pokémon by walking a certain distance.
- Made it easier to select smaller Pokémon on the screen.
- Fixed an issue where Eggs would sometimes hatch without displaying the animation.
- Improved performance reliability when a device switches networks to no longer cause the application to hang or stop updating.
- Pokémon GO Plus support
- Minor text fixes
This is going to upset a lot of people and I can see quite a few dropping the game entirely. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
