Samsung is trying to lessen the impact of faulty batteries in Galaxy Note 7 units out in the real world, especially for those who are holding onto their units. One way to do that is to limit the total charge the device’s battery can take.
Samsung has announced that it will be rolling out a software update, beginning for Galaxy Note 7 units in South Korea, that will restrict the phablet’s battery from charging beyond 60 percent. This could help to prevent the Note 7′s battery from overheating, which could cause an explosion. The number of explosions out in the real world continues to rise, with the most recent report of a phablet exploding in the hands of a 6-year old.
As mentioned above, the software update has been confirmed for South Korea, and it will go live on September 20. It has not been confirmed whether or not the software update will be released outside of South Korea.
Only being able to charge the device to 60 percent might be a pain, but considering Samsung and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have said that Galaxy Note 7 users should simply turn their device off altogether, this might be the only worthwhile option to consider for now.
