The year 2017 may just bring with it the foldable Samsung device that we’ve been hearing about since 2014.
A report today claimed that Samsung is aiming to debut a foldable smartphone in the third quarter of 2017. Sources tell the Korea Herald that Samsung plans to produce 100,000 units of the foldable device. The tipsters do caution that Samsung hasn’t made a final decision about whether or not to launch this device due to questions about its marketability and profitability.
The foldable smartphone is expected to have panels that face outward when folded. When unfolded, the device can be used as a 7-inch tablet.
Samsung hasn’t made any official announcements about a foldable smartphone launch, but it did produce a 2014 concept video showing what a device might look like.
Today’s report also says that LG is prepping its own foldable device and that it’ll produce more than 100,000 units in Q4 2017.
A smartphone that can fold up when you need a small device and unfold when you want a bigger display, like for watching videos, could come in handy. Because we haven’t yet seen a foldable smartphone actually come to market, though, we’ll have to wait and see how well this foldable tech works in the real world.
