The latest versions of Android are on the rise, while older versions continue to decline in use. Google’s Android distribution numbers for February 2017 show growth for Android Nougat and Marshmallow, the two newest versions of the operating system.
Android 7.0 has risen to 0.9 percent, and Android 7.1 is now at 0.3 percent, placing Nougat over the one percent mark. This new 1.2 percent total is up from 0.7 percent in January. Android 6.0 Marshmallow has shown continued growth, and now stands at 30.7 percent, a rise from 29.6 percent in January.
All other versions of Android (with the exception of Gingerbread) declined in use. Android 5.0-5.1 Lollipop continues to account for the largest number of devices at 32.9 percent. This is, however, a drop from 33.4 percent in January.
Android 4.4 KitKat now stands at 4.9 percent, Jellybean is at 11.3 percent, and Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread are both at one percent.
In the coming months, we expect to see Nougat growing at a significantly faster rate, with Marshmallow’s growth leveling off as devices are updated to Nougat. We also expect to see continued decline in older versions of Android, as devices are retired or updated to newer versions.
