Texting is one of the more commonly used elements on a mobile device, but it feels borderline ancient when compared to more advanced messaging apps. Luckily, that’s starting to change.
Google is rolling out support for Rich Communication Services in the Messenger app. With RCS support, text messaging apps like Messenger can offer read receipts, typing indicators, high-resolution photo sharing, and more. Google’s experience is powered by Jibe RCS cloud. and will be offered by Sprint in the United States.
Sprint subscribers using a Nexus or LG device will automatically get RCS support in Messenger through an app update. For users using other devices, they can install the latest update to Messenger from the Play Store. All new Android devices on Sprint will offer Messenger as the stock SMS experience beginning next year.
Google says support from other partners will be arriving in the coming months.
