HTC is no stranger to virtual reality, and it sounds like the company is doubling down on VR this year.
CNET reports that HTC has confirmed it will be launching a “mobile VR device” before the end of 2017. The new device will be compatible with the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the U Ultra, but the device won’t be a “a phone slapped onto a headset.”
HTC CFO Chia-lin Chang says that they are aiming to bridge the gap between a stay-at-home VR experience like the Vive and a mobile VR headset.
Chang added that the mystery VR device will launch before the end of the year.
While the hardware is one part of the puzzle, so is content, and HTC is working diligently to build out the software ecosystem ahead of the launch. Unfortunately, the company’s not opening up about what that entails just yet.
