Late last year, Pandora finally announced a premium tier that would make it a proper contender to Spotify and other streaming music services. With the new premium tier, Pandora brings on-demand streaming services that also allow for offline listening and much more. And much like the other streaming music services out there, Pandora Premium is hidden behind a $10 per month paywall.
The initial rollout of Pandora Premium will be available through invitations, which will start going out on Wednesday, March 15. Pandora says that a wider rollout for everyone will happen in the coming weeks. If you want to sign up to get an invite, you can do so right through this link.
The common elements of a subscription service are in place here: unlimited skips, the ability to listen to whatever song you want by searching (without having to start a radio station and hope, basically), and offline playback. Pandora will be relying on its Music Genome Project as well. Customers can start a new playlist with a single song, then tap on the “Add Similar Songs” button, which will allow the service to populate that playlist with up to seven new tracks, picked based on your listening habits. That feature will improve over time as you add and remove songs.
There is also a dedicated playlist called “My Thumbs Up” which collects all the songs a user has told Pandora that they like, enabling them to play all those tracks from a single source.
There’s no denying that Pandora Premium has some well-rooted competition already in place, so it will be interesting to see how well it stands that test moving forward. Do you plan on trying Pandora Premium out?
