HTC has been a proponent of virtual reality for quite some time, and its Vive VR headset has been praised as one of the best available on the market. However, the Vive requires a connection to a PC to use, which is a barrier for many potential users.
To broaden its VR reach, HTC has launched a brand new standalone headset called the Vive Focus. It’s designed to be an all-in-one unit, so there doesn’t need to be a connection to a PC or even a phone to experience VR.
The Vive Focus features an AMOLED display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor to power the show. Unfortunately, there isn’t much else known about the headset right now. We know the Vive Focus will be available in China soon, but any additional markets HTC plans on launching the headset remain a mystery.
HTC’s Vive Focus will use the HTC Vive Wave VR platform. The company just announced the platform today, and according to HTC, it will “open up the path to easy mobile VR content development and high-performance device optimization for third-party partners.” HTC needs content to help sell the headset, so making it easy for developers to reach that is a good thing.
HTC also says the Vive Focus headset allows for 6-degree-of-freedom tracking. That means you’ll be able to move around quite a bit with the headset on. HTC is throwing in an instant-on feature, too, letting you start the experience quickly. The Vive Focus also features a water-repellant coating for good measure.
There is a bit of bad news to go with HTC’s new headset. While HTC was originally named as one of the launch partners for the Daydream VR platform made by Google, it turns out that HTC has had a change of heart. As of today, HTC is cancelling its plans to launch a standalone Daydream VR headset.
