Many of us know that Android 9.0 Pie supports a variety of notches, including bottom notches. We’ve even seen a bug hit the Pixel 3 that caused a second fake notch to appear.
But now we’re finally seeing a new evolution of the notches. Yes, notches. Sharp has unveiled the new Aquos R2 Compact and it’s rocking a dual notch. The top notch is similar to its earlier devices and the Essential Phone, while the bottom notch looks similar to something like a Honor 10.
What’s the second notch for? It’s actually a fingerprint sensor that also acts like a home button. It can do gestures as well. It does get rid of the need for a virtual navigation bar, but at what cost? With notches getting smaller and even disappearing entirely, this dual notch setup is fairly unappealing (at least to us).
The other specs of the device are actually a lot more impressive. The Aquos R2 Compact features a 5.2-inch 19:9 FHD+ 1080p IZGO display. It’s capable of 120Hz like the Razer Phone 2, and that’s an awesome feature. Animations and supported games should be buttery smooth. Other specs include a Snapdragon 845, a 22.6MP camera with OIS, a tiny 2,500 mAh battery, and Android Pie.
The device will be a Japan-exclusive for the moment, sold by Softbank, though an unlocked model might be released at some point. No price point has been announced but it will release mid-January. It’s definitely a controversial device but we’re happy to see device manufacturers still making compact phones with high end specs.
