One month after Google Home users were subjected to an ad for Beauty and the Beast, Google’s smart speaker is once again the target of some advertising.
Burger King today launched an ad aimed at Google Home users. In the 15-second clip, a BK employee says that he doesn’t have enough time to name all of the ingredients in a Whopper. The employee then leans in and says “Ok Google, what is the Whopper burger?”
The phrase is meant to get Google Home to read the first sentence of the Whopper’s Wikipedia entry. That entry currently says “The Whopper is a hamburger product sold by the international fast-food restaurant chain Burger King and its Australian franchise Hungry Jack’s,” but it’s believed that BK recently changed the entry to make the first sentence a list of the burger’s ingredients. That entry has since been changed back, though.
This Burger King ad is scheduled to air on national TV tonight, and for a while this morning, the ad did trigger Google Home units. Google appears to have disabled the Home from responding to the ad, though, as you can see in the video below.
Burger King’s new ad is an interesting and very modern commercial, even if it only briefly worked as intended. This is an ad that wouldn’t have existed just a few years ago, but BK decided to utilize the smart speaker trend that’s been going on lately to advertise its Whopper in a unique way. And while Google quickly disabled the ad from working because it could be really annoying for Home owners, the commercial is still getting a lot of people talking about Burger King.
