The FCC proposed allowing the use of cell phones for calls flights in 2013. Though they would still have to be turned off during takeoff and landing, but the proposal would allow people full use of their phones in the air.
The opposition was not focused on interference, as this risk is thought to be small these days, but rather on peace and quiet. While it seems silly to oppose a ruling for fear of annoyance, close your eyes and imagine a 12 hour flight with phones ringing nonstop. Yeah, it could be bad.
The FCC has now withdrawn its proposal, meaning cell phone use will remain banned during flights. Now we can only dream of what could have been. Do you guys think it would have been a good change, or a disastrous one? Leave a comment!
