The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are due to launch in the US in 10 days, but when they do so, they won’t have one of their headline features in tow.
Samsung tells Axios that the Bixby Voice feature will not be ready in time for the Galaxy S8’s launch on April 21. No reason for the delay was given, but Samsung did say that Bixby Voice will be added “later this spring.”
Bixby Voice is the feature that allows the user to control select Samsung apps using only their voice. Samsung heavily touted the feature when it announced the GS8 last month, but apparently it needs a bit more time in the oven before its ready for public consumption.
Samsung does say that Bixby Vision will be at launch, meaning GS8 owners will be able to use their phone’s camera to identify objects in the real world. Also coming at launch is the Bixby Home feed as well as Bixby Reminder.
This is big news from Samsung, as Bixby Voice control was a major focus of the GS8’s announcement and Samsung hopes to make it an integral part of the user experience. The perfect time for new Galaxy S8 owners to try out Bixby Voice and get accustomed to using it regularly would be right at launch, but now the early GS8 buyers won’t have that feature to try out. Hopefully Samsung will be able to get Bixby Voice working quickly and that we won’t be waiting until the end of spring for it to arrive.
What do you think of this news? Were you Galaxy S8 pre-order customers planning to try Bixby Voice at launch?
