For Instagram users, chatting with Direct oftentimes means having multiple threads open for just one user. That’s because Instagram Direct doesn’t support a single thread that offered text-based conversations and ephemeral photos and videos, which meant if you wanted to send a video or picture to that person you were chatting with, you had to open a new thread. That’s finally changing, though, as Instagram today announced that it is combining these two features.
Instagram hopes the update to Direct will streamline conversations. Now when you send a photo or video to someone that you’re already having a text conversation with, you won’t have to open a completely separate thread. The photos and videos will appear inline with the rest of the conversation.
New disappearing videos will be highlighted in blue in a user’s inbox, and users can simply tap them to view them, and they’ll be able to replay them only once. If a user takes a screenshot of the photo or video, the sender will get notified.
The change is rolling out now along with an updated version of Instagram. How often do you use Instagram Direct?
