Security is an important issue in mobile, and the major four U.S. carriers think that they can help improve the situation.
AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon today announced that they’re partnering to form the Mobile Authentication Taskforce. This group will combine their technologies to create a mobile authentication solution that they aim to launch to both consumers and enterprises in 2018.
With this mobile authentication solution, the group aims to create an offering that’ll reduce mobile identity risks by analyzing data and activity patterns on a mobile network using network-based device authentication, geo-location, and SIM card recognition. They intend to use this information to predict with a high degree of certainty whether a user is who they say they are.
The GSMA will be helping out on this effort, too, in order to ensure that the mobile authentication solution is interoperable with solutions deployed by carriers.
It’s not often that we see all four major U.S. carriers get together, so it’s good to see them realize that consumer security and personal data is important. Now we’ll just have to wait and see what their solution is.
