Essential Phone gets teardown, about as unrepairable as they get

The Essential Phone feels like an incredibly built device. With a titanium frame, a ceramic back, squared off smooth edges, and a hefty weight, it screams premium and simply feels amazing. There aren’t many devices that evoke this sense of quality. Essential even put a tag with info inside the SIM slot instead of printing even a single letter on the outside of the device. This is adorable.

Unfortunately, this has resulted in a device that is simply a huge pain to repair. iFixit tore down the device and had to use both heat and freezing just to get the back panel off. The screen shattered upon removal, there are copious amounts of adhesives inside, and the USB Type-C port is soldered to the board. The insides are packed tight and everything is hard to get to. It’s a little easier to see why they omitted the headphone jack to keep the phone so small.

The Essential Phone is billed as tough to break, but that doesn’t make the fact that it can’t easily be repaired much better. If you own one, do your best not to shatter your display because you may find it hard to get someone to replace it. iFixit gave it a 1 out of 10 and it’s easy to see why.
