The Android One program has been around for quite some time, but the initiative hasn’t always received the best marketing even in areas where it’s supposed to have the most impact. Device selection hasn’t really been all that worthwhile, either, even for devices priced at around $100.
Now Xiaomi is joining the lineup, and it’s going a bit more premium in its effort, too. The new Xiaomi Mi A1 is a variant of the Mi 5X, which launched back in July, but with a few key changes in place to fit into the Android One family.
The specs offer up a strong mid-range handset. There’s a 5.5-inch FHD display, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor under the hood, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of built-in storage. There’s a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 256GB, and the battery measures in at 3080mAh. Meanwhile, on the back there are a pair of 12-megapixel cameras, one a wide-angle lens and the other a telephoto lens. Xiaomi removed optical image stabilization when compared to the aforementioned Mi 5X, though.
On the front of the Mi A1 there’s a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, on the bottom edge there’s a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack, and on the back is a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Mi A1 will be available in Rose Gold, Gold, and Black.
Xiaomi’s Mi A1 will be available in a variety of different countries, including Russia, Greece, and the Ukraine, before the end of the year. It will be priced at ₹14,990 (about $230).
