Project Fi now testing enhanced network to improve security and privacy

Project Fi customers, Google’s got a new feature for you to test.

Google today announced its enhanced network for Project Fi, which is now rolling out for beta testing. With this feature enabled, all of your traffic will be encrypted and sent through Google’s virtual private network (VPN) for added security. This includes cellular and Wi-Fi data. Google says that this traffic isn’t tied to your Google account or phone number, which means that no one can see your online activity, not even Google.

Another feature of Project Fi’s enhanced network is that it’ll help keep you connected when your Wi-Fi connection becomes unusuable. In these times, like when you’re walking away from your Wi-Fi network, Project Fi will fill in the gaps with cellular data. Google says that in its testing, this feature reduced the time without a working connection by up to 40 percent.

These enhanced network features are now rolling out in beta to Project Fi customers with an Android Pie phone. To enable the enhanced network, launch your Project Fi app and go into the “Fi Network Tools” section.
