Samsung has its own digital assistant called Bixby, a feature that Samsung has had high aspirations for ever since its initial debut.
As you know, Samsung makes a lot of devices, including refrigerators and TVs, and the company’s vision for Bixby was to have its assistant feature in all of those things. But it’s also not a secret that Bixby has yet to garner any real attention in the market and lags behind the other big players in the market, including the Google Assistant. Now it sounds like Samsung is changing pace, even if we haven’t heard anything about the company giving up on Bixby just yet.
According to a report from Variety, Samsung is planning on sticking Google Assistant in its TV lineup for 2019 and beyond. Future TV owners may use a built-in microphone in the TV to speak to Assistant, or may be able to pair a third-party smart speaker to access the feature.
There’s no mention of a combination of personal assistants, either. So if this report pans out, it appears that only Google Assistant will be on Samsung’s future TVs. That’s a pretty big shift for the company, and doesn’t seem like a big bet on Bixby moving forward.
The report also says that Samsung’s upcoming TVs will be able to automatically adapt their sound output based on the room they are in. The company has specific patents pointing in this direction, including one for audio spatial intelligence, which is described as “software for televisions, namely, software for use in optimizing sound quality depending on the surrounding environment, such as space size and ambient noise”. That means the audio output from the TVs will change depending on the room the unit is positioned in, similar to technology that’s present in Apple’s HomePod smart speaker and speakers from Sonos.
Samsung is probably going to announce its TV lineup, which may now feature Google Assistant on board, at CES 2019 next month, so we don’t have long to wait before this all shakes out one way or another.
